With Dr. Adam, every new chiropractic patient receives a very thorough examination, including detailed history of your current health condition, a neurological exam, relevant orthopaedic tests, postural and range of motion testing and x-rays covered by OHIP, only if it’s necessary for your complaint.

The approach and chiropractic technique Dr. Adam uses with each patient is unique and suited to that patient's specific needs and goals with chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Care - Chiropractic care addresses pain, stiffness, and other symptoms that affect an individual by finding the root of the problem that has led to these specific symptoms in the first place.  Specifically, the structure of the spine is assessed to determine if, first and foremost, there is anything that can be corrected.

If the structure of the spine is compromised (out of alignment) this will cause uneven strain to be placed on its components and as a result, it can cause inflammation, pressure, and degeneration at an increased rate. As a result, symptoms like pain and headaches are common but most patients do not realize that this can have an impact on their overall health.

We see many patients who come in with general symptoms like back pain or shoulder tightness and after correcting the root problem they start to notice improvements in other organic conditions like heartburn and IBS.  Dr. Adam will be the first to tell you there is no "special chiropractic adjustment" to improve these organic conditions but by improving the mechanical function of the spine and making slight changes to exercise and diet, your body will begin to function more optimally, and it is not uncommon to notice improvements in other aspects of your health.

Acupuncture - Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years, but only became popular in North America in the 1970’s.   There are many variations of acupuncture but the two distinct forms are referred to as classical acupuncture and modern acupuncture.

Classical acupuncture has many origins but the most commonly referred to form is a component of Traditional Chinese Medicine otherwise known as TCM.   There are 361 TCM acupuncture points that are located on 14 different meridians.  Modern acupuncture, sometimes referred to as Western acupuncture supports that acupuncture is a wonderful modality for stress relief, pain relief, tissue healing, and activation of immune and anti-inflammatory mechanisms.

Both forms have been used with electric stimulation which is called percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENS) which produces a greater analgesic effect and can target specific muscles, “turning them on” after an injury and prior to rehabilitation.

Acupuncture is great for certain conditions, ranging from knee osteoarthritis, and acute low back pain, to chronic knots in the upper back.

Orthotics - Custom orthotics and footwear can be very helpful for some people.  Orthotics are definitely not for everyone but for the people who need them, they can make huge improvements in the way they feel. Some common conditions that orthotics can help with are plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, metatarsalgia (pain in the ball of the foot), heel pain, Achilles tendon pain, tendinitis, low back pain, and knee pain.

Chiropractic Techniques

"If you only have a hammer, all you see is a nail."

It is important to have many different tools in order to complete a job correctly.  It is no different when we assess and care for patients. Everyone is an individual, and as a result there are anatomical variants and different symptoms for the condition between people . For that reason your chiropractor should use a variety of techniques to give you the best chiropractic care.

Thompson Drop Table - This technique uses the weight of the patient's body to assist the adjustment. This makes the adjustment easier on the patient. Although the sound of the table may be loud to someone new, patients are surprised that there is an alternative to the traditional techniques.

Activator - A low force instrument assisted technique that is great for children and adults.  This is great for sensitive patients or patients with osteoporosis.

Diversified - When most people think of a chiropractor this technique is usually what they picture. This is a traditional "crack" technique when used properly should cause no discomfort and very minimal twisting to the spine.

Active Release - A soft tissue technique that helps to alleviate muscle strain on the spine.

Webster's - This is specific to pregnant chiropractic patients. It helps to reduce pelvic strain and low back pain for mom, by assessing the pelvis and round ligament.

Your First Visit - Exam

Your first chiropractic visit is really important. This is where Dr. Adam will do a thorough history where he listen (really listen) and determine what the best course of testing will be.  Once Dr. Adam determines if we should proceed, you will have a specific spinal examination including but not limited to, neurological testing, postural analysis, orthopaedic testing, and x-rays if warranted.  At this point any questions or concerns you have regarding the testing or future chiropractic care will be answered.

Typically your first visit is strictly testing, so if you are at all apprehensive about seeing a chiropractor this should put your mind at ease. The one exception to this is when a patient comes in with severe pain and discomfort and we are able to check all tests and rule out any potential red flags.

Your Second Visit - Results & Chiropractic Care

This is the most important visit you will have in our office.  Dr. Adam will explain what it is he was testing on your first visit. These test results, and best plan of action will be explained so that it best suites your goals for feeling better and improving your health. At this time you will better understand if your condition is coming from the spine or soft tissue, if it’s chronic or acute, and if your problem is something better suited with another health care provider.

Dr. Adam Markew will give you his best recommendations on what needs to be done to correct the problem and what type of effort will be required. This is a perfect opportunity for you as the patient to ask questions about your care, about your condition or any worries that you may have. Dr. Adam will take the time that is needed to put all patients at ease so you feel comfortable and understand what will be done to achieve better health.
